Show Your Strength

When Brook Peters set out to make his film about living through 9/11 as a child, he didn’t realize THE SECOND DAY would convey a universal story of inner strength and resilience that could inspire people around the world. In response to Brook’s Show Your Strength Campaign, over 150 young people submitted their personal stories of courage and hope. And the band Simple Plan supported the campaign by offering their song “What If”.

Watch the music video below to see how others face life’s challenges, and share the video to inspire people you know. Play it forward by sharing your story.

Award-winning Canadian rock band Simple Plan supported the Show Your Strength Campaign to inspire youth across the globe. “I approached Simple Plan to use the song What If  as the soundtrack to the Show Your Strength video because I feel it makes listeners question what they can do to change themselves and, in turn, help to change the world,” said Brook Peters.

Hope. You always have to hope for the best. Even when things are really bad, sometimes just hoping that things will get better can get you through it. Whatever you do never stop hoping!

I’ve been bullied. I’ve been hurt by the boy I’m in love with. I’ve faced with telling the difference between ending my life and keeping it. I learned that even if the world’s against me, there is a person that keeps me breathing. I’ve been hurt, torn, dealing with depression and so forth. But always, there is someone that is the reason I keep breathing <3

Through most of school I’ve always been teased because I was different, this always left me as the outcast. At age 12 i lost my best friend to cancer, and that sent me on a spiraling depression, later leading to self injury. No one in school understood because my friend was from out of state, they all called me a liar and said that i was “just looking for attention.” Standing here looking at 15 I know that all that did was make me stronger, and teach me that the only person who can hold you back is yourself by listening to what other people think of you. They can only hold you back if you let them.

I was born into an abusive home. My mom finally left when I was five. She tried to take me with her, but my dad lied and charmed the courts so he was awarded full custody. That’s when the physical abuse really began.

When I was 8 my mom came back for me but could only stand 13 months with my father before she left again. This time, he began even more violent and made me sleep in bed with him, where he did things no father should do to a daughter.

At 12 I was finally old enough where the courts listened to me an placed me with my mother, deeming my father an “unfit parent”. Though I was out of his reach, the effects of my father’s abuse still lingered. Manifesting itself through violent outbursts, fits of rage, and a habit of self injury.

After several suicide attempts and therapists, I know what he did to me wasn’t my fault and even though the anger is still there, it doesn’t own me.

Now I’m 21 and this January I’m going to go to college to become a social worker. I want to fix the system and help kids.
