Show Your Strength

When Brook Peters set out to make his film about living through 9/11 as a child, he didn’t realize THE SECOND DAY would convey a universal story of inner strength and resilience that could inspire people around the world. In response to Brook’s Show Your Strength Campaign, over 150 young people submitted their personal stories of courage and hope. And the band Simple Plan supported the campaign by offering their song “What If”.

Watch the music video below to see how others face life’s challenges, and share the video to inspire people you know. Play it forward by sharing your story.

Award-winning Canadian rock band Simple Plan supported the Show Your Strength Campaign to inspire youth across the globe. “I approached Simple Plan to use the song What If  as the soundtrack to the Show Your Strength video because I feel it makes listeners question what they can do to change themselves and, in turn, help to change the world,” said Brook Peters.

“Why are trying so hard to fit in, when you’re born to stand out”

My life wasn’t as easy as everybody thought. Fear always defeated me. It ruined my life. I suffered a lot until I realized that I also have some qualities (Everybody has!) and I have the right to live my life the way I want, no matter what others think. Because of fear I lost a lot of important things in my life, and now I regret them.
The society that surrounded me even further increased the fear inside me. That small village where I was born and where I wasted 17 years of my life comletly destroyed me. Living there, was a real hell. I was sick of all the malignities around me, I couldn’t stand that atmosphere: the envy, the hate, the hypocrisy, the spite, the lie, the injustice, the moral decent, the ignorance, the humilation, the duplicity, the pity, the accusations, the blame, the fear of others’ reaction, the fear of saying or doing something wrong, the fear of being myself. These things totally exasperated me, made me to hate people and to hate life. In this period of my life I felt lost, like no one could understand me, no one could hear me, no one care about me, neither my parents nor my friends. My best friend acted like an enemy, when I was in a trouble she always turned away from me. I was dissapointed in everybody. I felt myself a miserable, an insignificant person. I wanted only to stay all day in my room, to stay alone, not to talk to anybody, not to hear anybody’s lies and blames. I wanted to go somewhere where nobody knew me. I had a serious depression and nobody recognised this, (or nobody wanted to), I couldn’t count on anyone, I had to solve it by myself. I was often humilated, and it was very painful. I suffered a lot, I was ridiculized, ostracized and looked down, I was afraid to look into people’s eyes, I felt like a murderer, who’s afraid of people’s blame. And possibly there was some truth in it, – I let killed the person inside me, the child who was everytime happy, who believed in her dreams – I wasn’t able to fight. :\ maybe this was why I felt myself guilty.
Then I decided that this cannot go on for long, I wanted to change, to be strong, to be a better person, to fight for respect, for my rights and for my dreams, to stand up for things or persons in what I really believed. I believe in the saying “what doesn’t kill you, will make you even stronger”. And this was what had happened to me. But it took some years until I realized that. Now I think I managed to overcome the fear much or little, it’s true that sometimes it comes out yet, but now I already will know how to handle it. I started being glad about my life and see the magic in everything. I have a lot of dreams about the future, a lot of aims of what I want to achieve, to make my parents proud of me and to show them that even they never encouraged me to fight, I can win.
Now I just want to break up from this “ethical misery”, I want to make a fresh start somewhere, where my opportunities aren’t limited as much as here. But until that I have to wait a year, to turn 18, to go to the university, to learn psychology, to share my knowledge with those who need it, to help people, to save them, to make something good, something useful, to make a difference. I want to encourage everybody to do so. Don’t let fear or people overcome you, or change you, dare to be different, dare to be yourself, because you WEREN’T BORN TO FIT IN, BUT TO STAND OUT! ; )

Hello! My name is Lynn Monk, and I’m from Killarney, Manitoba, Canada. My saying “Failure is an event, not a person” is something I try hard to live by. when someone thinks they “failed” at something, i always say this. No one can ever fail at something, if it’s done wrong, that just means you need to try harder to do it right! (:
