THE SECOND DAY: A CLASSROOM DISCUSSION GUIDE

The Second Day Classroom Discussion Guide and Lesson Plans help teachers and students (grades 6-12) explore the complex narratives surrounding one of today’s most far-reaching modern tragedies, September 11, 2001.  Through 14 year old Brook Peter’s narration, students witness his thoughts and fears, as well as those of his fellow students, teachers and community members.  Lesson objectives, questions and activities reinforce the film’s most powerful message:  how a devastated community and its youngest members can learn from, grow and ultimately give back as a result of their life-changing experiences.   Students will also discover how The Second Day has relevance for today’s challenging world.   It is an opportunity for students to recognize how people not only survive, but can even thrive when faced with  unthinkable challenges.  The lesson plans offer suggestions and resources for beginning these important conversations in the classroom, and ultimately moving them to homes and communities.
